The bottom line is, nuclear weapons are scary as hell. No matter how you slice it, they are a weapon system that if deployed in any scenario, everyone, the whole world, would suffer. So the real issue is wether the United States, Russia, China and other nations understand the true damage modern nuclear weapons can inflict on the world at large.

The question is “Do we really need these weapons?”. Looking back at the only two nuclear weapons dropped in a conflict, a lot of Americans wish we had never made the damn things. Sure it saved lives in the long run, but we knew nothing about fallout, and thermal damage. After dropping those two bombs it was like, “Oh, no, what have we done.” Even the Russian government felt the same way when it dropped the largest nuclear bomb at roughly 50 to 57 Megaton’s, which is why they never did it again, not because they couldn’t but because they realized it was a bad thing.

I know this is off track, but the world doesn’t realize that we owe our lives to both JRK and Khrushchev, that’s right BOTH leaders. The US didn’t win the crisis. In fact it was Khrushchev who was the bigger man and backed down. Both men knew the dangers of nuclear war and saved all of us. JFK was worried about a coupe by the US Military. That’s right, a military coupe in America. There was also a Russian sub commander who resist the temptation to launch, again saving all of us. I just thought it was important to realize that the world owes a lot to the Russian people. More so than we ever know. (I am an American by the way.) I know that Russia’s decision to put missiles in Cuba was the issue at hand, but then again, the US tried and failed to launch a sudo invasion of Cuba, so we kind of forced them in to it. The fact is, we all make bad decisions at points in time. I just hope we never make the mistake of using Nukes!
