China vs United States: Nuclear Arms Race
Aby April 29th, 2007
The Cold War came to an end with the dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) on 1991. The world gave a sigh of relief hoping that there will be no World War 3 and the United States of America (USA) would be motivated to stop any further wars. But it was not to be. In the same year the Soviet dissolved, US went into war against Iraq, an ally. It followed with bombings of Yugoslavia in 1995, a few skirmishes in between and finally the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
China, which was sidelined by USA before the 1990s as just another nuclear and communist country saw the way the world was going. With the Soviet dissolved and no one to keep in check, US went on an unstoppable annexation spree on a global scale. The wars and hi tech weapons of US shook the Chinese administration and they realised how ineffective the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China would be to a US invasion. Fearing for its national security and political stance in world affairs, China began a massive arms race both on the area of nuclear and conventional warfare.

Chinese President Hu Jintao (Left) and US President George Bush (Right) : None of them is ready to compromise.
The rapid strides in military development by China and deployment of nuclear warheaded ICBMs against US as a target, was noticed by Pentagon and subsequently the White House. This made the US administration give a boost to its own militarisation program using the rising power of China’s military as a justification. The result was another arms race, rivalled only by the Cold War. Neither country is willing to compromise despite their interdependence. US is even lesser to do so considering its mounting debts which it owes to China. While China follows a deterrence policy aimed against USA coupled with a ‘No First Use‘ policy, the US tends to follow an offense based policy with no promises against using nuclear weapons. This favours the world towards China rather than USA. The recent anti-satellite missile test by China added fuel to the fire and US realised China went ahead much faster than they hoped or expected.
This arms race is hurting the relationships of both countries and keeping the world on its toes both on an economic and military scale. Both countries had a large base of allies and supporters. But after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 without any reasonable cause, a large number of world countries grew polarised towards China. They see the rise of China as the rise of a power who would be able to keep stability in the world by keeping USA in check against causing further harm to the world. A multi polar world would give countries motivation to stop their arms and nuclear race. But with large gaping differences between government systems of the two countries and their foreign policy, this is hoping against hope.
It is time people with neutral affiliation and clear reasonable heads directed their efforts to put an end to this. The US must stop using military conquests as a foreign policy which is not helping in anything except generate a worldwide dislike for US and a scramble for nuclearisation. Settling issues diplomatically rather than military wars would help to make the world a safer place, help US economy and give sufficient motivation for countries to stop militarisation races.

Gee, looks like another world war is looming in the air.
“With the Soviet dissolved and no one to keep in check, US went on an unstoppable annexation spree on a global scale.”
Please name nations and territories that americans have annexed since the fall of the Soviet Union.
They were mentioned above. Iraq and Afghanistan are already annexed. If North Korea was a non nuclear power it would have followed and so would have Iran.
Yeah right, China has no match to USA. Statistic, based on the number of nuclear warheads in possession, USA can easily destroy China more than 66 times but China could only destroy USA once! But is there a difference?
China is nothing more than a paper tiger. They don’t even have the guts to attack Taiwan despite telling the world that Taiwan is a break away province. All the U.S has to say is it will defend Taiwan and the Chinese is reduced to empty threats.
The U.S can make every major city in China un-inhabitable for a thousand years if they dare to shoot nuke the U.S way.
Bob, China isn’t attacking Taiwan right now because it would be stupid to do so, not because they are afraid. The status quo works out well for them and there is little chance that Taiwan is going to declare independence anytime soon. China has become strongly integrated with the world economy and they don’t have anything to gain by taking Taiwan by force. I think what’s more likely to happen is someday China and Taiwan will peacefully integrate. I think China expects that to happen too so they see no point in risking a war just to hurry things up.
Colonialism is alive and kicking, but not neccesarily in the old fashioned guise of conquer and control via boots on the ground. The new form of control is through banking, IMF, World bank, etc. The USA as with any power does not wish
to relinquish or concede defeat( the French had a similar problem, Indo-china, algeria etc).If China ever
becomes a power then it too will go through a similar phase of growth and decline. What can be seen from
the comments abve is the usual flag waving jingoistic noises being made by any individual who would
consider themslves a ‘patriot’. China has become quite shrewd in that when doing deals with other nations
the make it a point of stressing that they wish not to meddle in the internal politics of that country. The US on the other hand makes a point of call in sticking its nose into the business of other nations. Man commentators may say
that as a democracy, its job should be to spread democracy by any means neccesary. In this desire for
democracy and liberty, should the US and its people not reflect on the evil meted out to the Native
Americans at the hands of their forefathers(puritan christians). Are the Native Americans not deserving of
justice.
i think the us will destroy china so fast they will not see it
