Will the end of Gaddafi herald a free Libya?

The capture and execution of Libyan leader Moammar Khaddafi was welcomed with much pomp and fanfare both by the western world and the Libyan diaspora. The Sun, a promiment British daily came out with the news headline, “That’s for Lockerbie, Gaddafi” from their defence editor Virginia Wheeler. In a manner of tabloid unprofessionalism that could put Pravda and Fox News to shame, Ms. Wheeler called Gaddafi a “Libyan Mad Dog” and embellished her piece with relish at his execution.

Given his history of tyranny, Gaddafi probably deserved it. But is this the end, really? The execution, carried out mob justice style bore an uncanny resemblance to the execution of Najibullah by the Taliban Mujahedin in Afghanistan. Or the execution of Abul Kasem by Saddam’s Baathist rebels in Iraq. Both these events were welcomed with as much jubilation by the western public and media as Gaddafi’s execution today. Both these events led to the era of another, more brutal and genodical fascism.

The Libyan Islamic Fighting Group that has been fighting against Gaddafi’s regime in Libya is led by Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi Belhaj, a known member of the Taliban and perhaps, al-Qaeda as well. His rebel gang is made up of youngsters with little to no education, commanded by a band of al-Qaeda jihadists who have very little understanding of or sympathy for democracy, secularism or civil code. By overthrowing their most hated and feared leader, they have tasted blood and are as likely to be just as drunk in power as the Taliban were in 1996.

It appears that we are looking at the beginning of another Islamist regime, this time in Libya. And the next terrorist attack on US soil could be 10 or 15 years down the line, from the same jihadis that the US backed and supported today.
